How much does a baby cost the first year? $1,162 a month, $2,218 with daycare

Every line priced from a dated primary source, month by month. The famous USDA number is in 2015 dollars, so we started from zero.

A dad in a t-shirt bottle-feeding his infant at a kitchen counter at dawn, a closed laptop pushed aside

A baby costs about $1,162 a month in the first year without daycare and $2,218 a month with it, or $13,938 and $26,610 for the year, when every line from diapers and formula to the health insurance jump and the delivery bill is priced from a dated primary source. Daycare alone is 47.6% of the bigger number. A family already on a family health plan comes in at $711 and $1,767 a month.

Key takeaways

  • Daycare is the biggest line: $1,056 a month for full-time infant center care, the Labor Department's 2022 middle-state median.
  • Single to family health coverage adds about $451 a month on average in 2025 worker contributions (KFF). It's $0 for a couple already on a family plan.
  • The one-time hit: $2,743 out of pocket on average for pregnancy, birth and postpartum care on an employer plan, 2021 to 2023 claims (Peterson-KFF).
  • Formula runs $215 a month for Similac 360 Total Care at 32 oz a day (Walmart.com, Oct 16, 2026). The store brand is an estimated $1,405 less a year.
  • Store-brand Size 1 diapers sold by Walmart.com, $17.97 per 162 on Oct 16, 2026, cost $486 less a year than Pampers Swaddlers Size 1 there.
  • The USDA's $233,610 is an 18-year total in 2015 dollars. Its age 0 to 2 line is $18,026 a year in Sep 2026 dollars ($12,680 in 2015 dollars x 1.4216 CPI-U).

The government's number for this is $233,610. It covers 18 years, and it's in 2015 dollars.

That doesn't help much in month 3, when the question is what leaves the checking account. So we built the first-year baby budget for our new parent financial checklist 1 line at a time.

Every line needed a primary source with a date on it, or it got cut. The 2 biggest are daycare and the health insurance jump, and both have a $0 version.

Month 1 is the heavy one. The $2,743 delivery bill and the $139.99 car seat land there, which puts month 1 at $3,820 without daycare and $4,876 with it.

The recurring lines, averaged over the year, come to $921 and $1,977 a month. Spread the 2 one-time items across all 12 months and you get the headline $1,162 and $2,218.

1 line comes in 2 sizes: the $451 is a worker going from single to family coverage. Already on a family plan, that line is $0, and the year drops to $8,528 without daycare and $21,200 with it.

How much does a baby cost with daycare vs without?

Daycare adds $12,672 to the year at $1,056 a month, the Labor Department's 2022 middle-state median for full-time infant center care. That's 47.6% of the $26,610 with-daycare total.

Every other line combined: $13,938. Daycare alone: $12,672.

That makes daycare the fork in the cost of having a baby in the first year, so we ran the whole year both ways.

Year 1 with and without full-time infant daycare, all other lines identical. Daycare: Labor Department 2022 middle-state median. Dadvesting calculation, Oct 16, 2026.

Month 1 (includes delivery and car seat)$3,820$4,876
Month 2$937$1,993
Month 12$912$1,968

Year 1 total, family health plan already in place$8,528$21,200
Per month, family health plan already in place$711$1,767

$1,056 is the middle state. In our table of infant daycare cost by state, the 2022 medians run from $514 a month in Mississippi to $2,123 in DC.

It's also a 2022 price, the latest in the Labor Department database. Our daycare article puts the same middle state at about $1,236 a month in 2025 prices, which makes the with-daycare year $28,770, or $2,398 a month.

And it assumes 12 months of care. A family that starts daycare in month 4 after leave pays for 9 months: $9,504 instead of $12,672.

A 2026 dependent care FSA can hold $7,500 of that pre-tax. What that's worth is in our breakdown of the dependent care FSA for 2026.

How much does having a baby cost out of pocket with insurance?

$2,743 on average for pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care on an employer plan, based on 2021 to 2023 claims in 2023 dollars (Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker).

Total spending was $20,416. Insurance paid $17,674 of it.

A cesarean costs the plan a lot more and the family a little more: $28,998 in total spending against $15,712 for a vaginal birth, but $3,071 out of pocket against $2,563. Peterson-KFF says enrollees with a hospital stay often reach the deductible or the out-of-pocket maximum either way.

We book it in month 1 to keep the model simple. In life it shows up as bills across pregnancy, delivery and the weeks after, and it can straddle 2 plan years.

About half of births are covered by Medicaid, which Peterson-KFF says generally has little or no out-of-pocket cost. There, this line is close to $0 and the no-daycare year is about $11,195.

A family on Medicaid isn't paying the employer premium jump either. With that line at $0 too, the no-daycare year is about $5,785.

How much do diapers cost per month?

$83 in month 1 and $58 by month 12 for Pampers Swaddlers Size 1 at the Walmart.com price on Oct 16, 2026. That's about 2,981 diapers and $817 for the year.

2,981 diapers. Read that again.

The count is Pampers' own, from a guide updated Jun 19, 2026: 8 to 12 a day for a newborn, tapering to 6 to 8 by 9 to 12 months. We used the midpoints, at $44.94 for 164 on Walmart.com on Oct 16, 2026, or 27.4 cents a diaper.

We held that Size 1 price all year, and bigger sizes cost more. On Walmart.com the same day, Size 2 ran 34.5 cents and Size 4 ran 42.4 cents, so $817 is a low figure.

Now the brand premium. Parent's Choice Dry and Gentle Size 1, sold by Walmart.com, was $17.97 for 162 on Oct 16, 2026. That's 11.1 cents a diaper.

Same year of diapers: $331 instead of $817. A $486 difference.

The baby has no opinion on the logo.

Wipes aren't on the list. We found no primary source for how many a baby goes through, so we didn't make one up.

How much does baby formula cost per month?

$215 a month for Similac 360 Total Care at 32 ounces a day, at the Walmart.com price of $49.97 a can on Oct 16, 2026. That's $2,583 for the year.

32 ounces is the American Academy of Pediatrics cap, and we held it all 12 months, so this line is an upper bound in every month and highest against the first weeks. At Abbott's yield of 226 fl oz per 30.8 oz can, that's 4.31 cans a month.

Brand moves this line more than anything else on the page.

The same Walmart.com page on Oct 16, 2026 listed Parent's Choice Gentle Infant Formula at $24.28 for 32.8 oz, a rollback price down from $26.98. It's a gentle formula, not a like-for-like match for Similac 360 Total Care.

We didn't fetch its yield, so this part is an estimate: if an ounce of its powder makes the same amount, the line drops to about $98 a month, a $1,405 difference for the year at that sale price.

Breastfeeding takes the formula line to $0 in our model. HealthCare.gov says your plan "must cover the cost of a breast pump," plus breastfeeding support and counseling, except grandfathered plans.

How much does health insurance go up when a baby arrives?

About $451 a month on average for a worker moving from single to family coverage. That's the gap between KFF's 2025 average worker contributions: $1,440 a year for single, $6,850 for family.

$5,410 a year. For that worker, this line is bigger than diapers and formula combined.

Of course it's the gap between 2 national averages... blah blah. It stands in for a typical employer, not any 1 plan, and it's no ceiling: KFF reports family contributions run much higher at firms with 10 to 199 workers.

KFF publishes no employee-plus-spouse tier, so the smaller step from couple to family coverage has no price here. A couple already on a family plan adds $0, which is why every total comes in 2 versions.

Your employer's plan documents have the real number for your tiers. It's the 1 line on this page you can look up exactly, tonight.

The enrollment side, deadline included, is in adding a newborn to health insurance.

How much does it cost to raise a baby in 2026, according to the USDA?

$18,026 a year for a child age 0 to 2, or $1,502 a month, once the USDA's $12,680 (2015 dollars) is brought to Sep 2026 dollars with the BLS CPI-U factor of 1.4216.

The famous $233,610 is the same report's total through age 17 for a child born in 2015 to a middle-income married couple, in 2015 dollars. The report came out in January 2017, and the USDA has not published a newer edition.

USDA spending on a child age 0 to 2, married couple earning $59,200 to $107,400, younger of 2 children. USDA 2015 report, Table 1, 2015 dollars, x 1.4216 (BLS CPI-U) for Sep 2026 dollars. Rows may not sum to the total. Checked Oct 16, 2026.

Food$1,580$2,246$187
Transportation$1,790$2,545$212
Clothing$750$1,066$89

Miscellaneous$830$1,180$98
Total, age 0 to 2$12,680$18,026$1,502

Our no-daycare number is $13,938, which is $4,088 lower. The 2 count different things, and the lines move in both directions.

The USDA counts $5,231 of housing and $2,545 of transportation, its share of the mortgage and the car for the baby. Nobody's rent changes in month 1, so we left those out.

That's $7,776 the USDA counts and we don't, more than the whole gap. Going the other way, we count the $2,743 delivery bill, which the USDA excludes, and the $5,410 insurance jump, against a USDA health care line of $1,677.

Its child care line, $4,080, covers only families that pay for care, averaged with education. And the all-items CPI understates child care, so $4,080 is low.

We did take 2 lines straight from the USDA, clothing and misc, because we found no newer primary source for either. Drop them and the no-daycare year falls to $11,692.

What's missing from this first-year baby expenses list?

Anything without a primary source. Here's what didn't make it, and why.

  • The baby's own doctor bills. The same Peterson-KFF brief puts out-of-pocket spending for a child on a parent's employer plan at $475 in the first 3 months of coverage and $1,511 by 18 to 24 months (2021 to 2023 claims, 2023 dollars). It gives no full-year figure, so we didn't model it. It would add to every total on this page.
  • Wipes, bottles, nursing supplies, baby food, medicine. No primary source for quantities. The USDA misc line covers personal care, so some of this sits in the $98.
  • Gear beyond the car seat. We priced 1 item, the $139.99 Graco SnugRide 35 Lite LX (Target.com, Oct 16, 2026), because the American Academy of Pediatrics says to "avoid used car seats if you don't know the seat's history." Everything else with "baby" in the product name is in what to put on a baby registry.
  • Lost wages and unpaid leave. The USDA leaves these out too. See paid paternity leave.
  • Life insurance. Not a baby cost, but it lands in the same month. See life insurance for new parents.
  • A nanny instead of daycare. Daycare vs nanny runs $1,585 vs $4,135 a month at Care.com's 2026 posted rates, payroll taxes and sick-day backup included.

What the math says

In year 1 a baby runs about $1,162 a month without daycare and $2,218 with it, at Oct 2026 retail prices, 2025 insurance data, 2022 daycare data and 2021 to 2023 delivery data. Daycare moves the answer most, at $1,056 a month in the middle state (2022 Labor Department median).

Next comes the single-to-family insurance jump, about $451 a month or $5,410 a year on average, and $0 if the family plan already exists. Then the $2,743 delivery bill, close to $0 on Medicaid. Then formula, $2,583 a year for Similac 360 Total Care at 32 oz a day (Walmart.com, Oct 16, 2026). Take out the insurance jump and the formula and the no-daycare year is $5,946, or $495 a month.

How we ran the numbers

1 Python script sums 9 lines for months 1 to 12, once with daycare and once without. Every figure on this page is what the script printed.

  • Months are 365 / 12 = 30.4167 days.
  • Diapers per day: 10 in months 1 and 2, 9 in months 3 and 4, 8 in months 5 to 8, 7 in months 9 to 12, the midpoints of Pampers' ranges (guide updated Jun 19, 2026). $44.94 / 164 = $0.274 a diaper, Pampers Swaddlers Size 1, Walmart.com, Oct 16, 2026, held all 12 months, which understates the larger sizes. Store brand: Parent's Choice Dry and Gentle Size 1, sold by Walmart.com, $17.97 / 162 = $0.111, Oct 16, 2026, $331 a year.
  • Formula: 32 fl oz a day, the AAP's stated cap, so an upper bound. 973.3 fl oz a month / 226 fl oz per can (Abbott) = 4.31 cans x $49.97 (Similac 360 Total Care 30.8 oz, Walmart.com, Oct 16, 2026) = $215. Store brand: $24.28 / 32.8 oz (Parent's Choice Gentle, Walmart.com rollback price, Oct 16, 2026) against $49.97 / 30.8 oz, ratio 0.456, x $215 = $98 a month, $1,178 a year, $1,405 less, assuming the same yield per ounce of powder (not fetched).
  • Health insurance: ($6,850 - $1,440) / 12 = $451, KFF 2025 average annual worker contributions, family and single. An average, not a ceiling: KFF reports family contributions run much higher at firms with 10 to 199 workers. Assumes 1 worker moves from single to family coverage. Every headline total is also reported with this line at $0.
  • Pregnancy and delivery: $2,743, Peterson-KFF, employer plans, 2021 to 2023 claims in 2023 dollars, not adjusted. It measures the difference across pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care, not a single bill. Booked in month 1, as is the $139.99 car seat (Target.com, Oct 16, 2026).
  • Clothing $750 and misc $830 a year in 2015 dollars: USDA 2015 report, Table 1, married couple, $59,200 to $107,400, age 0 to 2, younger child of 2. Each x 336.940 / 237.017 = 1.4216 (BLS CPI-U all items, CUUR0000SA0, Sep 2026 index over 2015 annual average, pulled Oct 16, 2026), then / 12. Only-child sensitivity: x 1.27, which the USDA applies to the total and we applied per line.
  • Daycare: $1,056 a month for 12 months, Labor Department 2022 middle-state median for full-time infant center care, as published in our infant daycare article. 12 x $1,056 = $12,672 (that article's weekly-based annual is $12,675). Not inflation adjusted in the base case. No FSA or tax credit applied.
  • No return assumption, so no rate sensitivity. Sensitivities run instead: no formula, store-brand formula and diapers, no insurance change, Medicaid delivery at $0 (with and without the insurance line), no USDA lines, only-child multiplier, 2025 daycare prices.
  • Every figure rounded to the dollar at the end. Every difference is 1 rounded figure minus another.
