Child tax credit for a baby born in 2026: $2,200, even on Dec 31

The credit is the easy part. A box on the hospital form and 1 line on your W-4 decide whether it shows up in this year's paychecks, next spring's refund, or not at all.

A dad holding his sleeping newborn on his chest in a dim nursery at dusk

The child tax credit for a baby born in 2026 is $2,200 on the 2026 return for a married couple earning $37,200 to $400,000, even if the baby arrives Dec 31, and it can show up as $84.62 more per biweekly paycheck once Step 3 of the W-4 is updated. Above $400,000 of joint income it shrinks, and with 1 child it is gone at $443,001.

Key takeaways

  • Up to $1,700 of the credit is refundable in 2026, capped at 15% of earned income over $2,500 (26 U.S.C. 24, IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).
  • A baby born any day of 2026 counts for the whole year, NICU stay included (IRS Publication 501).
  • No Social Security number issued by the return's due date, extensions included, means no credit (26 U.S.C. 24). The request is 1 question on the hospital's birth registration form.
  • Payroll divides W-4 Step 3 by all 26 paychecks, not the ones left. A W-4 updated with 6 paychecks to go moves $508 into 2026 and leaves $1,692 for the refund, at $54,200 of wages or more (IRS Publication 15-T).
  • The phase-out counts any fraction of $1,000 as a full $50 step. With 2 kids the credit lasts until $487,001 of joint income.
  • Below $58,863 of joint income, the baby also opens the earned income credit, up to $4,427 for 2026. A couple earning $40,000 gets about $3,014 of it.
  • The $1,000 Trump Account deposit takes a separate election, Form 4547, which can be filed online since May 28, 2026 (IRS IR-2026-68).

This is the tax stop on our new parent financial checklist, and it starts with good news. For a married couple earning $37,200 to $400,000, a 2026 baby is worth $2,200 on the 2026 return, and a December baby counts the same as a January one.

The bad news is your paycheck hasn't heard. Until payroll gets a new W-4, it keeps withholding like the baby doesn't exist. That is $84.62 every 2 weeks parked with the IRS at 0% until you file in 2027.

It comes back. It is your money with a delay on it.

How much is the child tax credit for a baby born in 2026?

$2,200 per child under 17. For a married couple earning $37,200 to $400,000, a 2026 newborn gets all of it on the 2026 return.

The 2025 tax law (Public Law 119-21) set the credit at $2,200 and indexed it to inflation. The 2026 adjustment didn't move it (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

2026 credit per child

$2,200

Refundable, at most

$1,700

1 child's credit hits $0

$443,001

Up to $1,700 of it is refundable. That is the additional child tax credit, the part the IRS pays out even when your tax bill is smaller than the credit.

A couple with $40,000 of wages and a 2026 baby, for example, gets $780 as a tax cut and $1,420 as a refund. Same $2,200, 2 pieces.

Why would a baby born in 2026 get less than the full $2,200?

Income at either end. Below $37,200 of wages the tax bill is too small for the whole credit to land, and above $400,000 of joint income the credit phases out until it hits $0 at $443,001 with 1 child.

The floor is where the 2 pieces meet. At $37,200 of wages a couple owes $500 of tax for the credit to wipe out, and the refundable $1,700 covers the rest.

The ceiling is $400,000 of modified adjusted gross income on a joint return, $200,000 for everyone else. Over it, the credit drops $50 for every $1,000.

The fine print: any fraction of $1,000 counts as a full step. At exactly $443,000 the credit is $50, and $1 more takes it to $0. With 2 kids it lasts until $487,001.

Here is the baby on 3 returns. Look at the first 2 rows.

Tax year 2026, married filing jointly, 1 earner, 1 child born in 2026, 26 paychecks. The $450,000 row assumes Step 3 is left blank, as the 2026 W-4 directs above $400,000 joint. Dadvesting calculation, Oct 16, 2026.
Household wagesFederal income tax before the babyChild tax creditPer-paycheck change after W-4 Step 3Over 26 paychecks
$90,000$6,440$2,200$84.62$2,200
$150,000$15,340$2,200$84.62$2,200
$450,000$86,608$0$0.00$0

Income doesn't change the number. It only changes whether you get it.

The $450,000 row is $0 twice: no credit, and the 2026 W-4 tells anyone over $400,000 joint to skip Step 3. In between it gets odd. A couple at $410,000 still gets $1,700 at filing, but the W-4 says leave Step 3 blank, so none of it reaches a paycheck.

Do I get the child tax credit for a baby born this year, even in December?

Yes. A baby born in December 2026, even on Dec 31, gets the same child tax credit as a baby born Jan 1. The IRS does not prorate babies.

Normally a qualifying child has to live with you more than half the year, which a December baby can't do. IRS Publication 501 has an exception, and the exact words are the point:

"A child who was born or died during the year is treated as having lived with you more than half the year if your home was the child's home more than half the time the child was alive during the year."

The same paragraph covers a NICU stay. A required hospital stay after birth doesn't count against you.

The other tests are easy at 3 weeks old. Under 17 at year end. Your son or daughter. Didn't provide more than half of her own support (she did not). US citizen, national or resident alien. Claimed as your dependent.

That last test is where the paperwork starts.

Can I claim my newborn on taxes without a Social Security number?

No. Without a Social Security number issued by the return's due date, extensions included, there is no child tax credit and no dependent on the return.

For a 2026 baby that means a number by the April 2027 deadline, or Oct 2027 with an extension (26 U.S.C. 24, IRS Publication 501).

The 2025 law added a second lock. Since the 2025 tax year a parent needs an SSN too, and on a joint return at least 1 spouse has to have one. An ITIN alone does not unlock the credit.

You apply for the baby's number at the hospital, before anyone has slept. The birth registration form has a question about requesting a Social Security number, and a yes gets you a receipt, Form SSA-2853. The SSA calls this Enumeration at Birth.

The card comes in the mail. The SSA says the wait varies by state, and the IRS says it usually takes about 2 weeks once the SSA has everything it needs.

Miss the box and the fallback is Form SS-5, filed with the SSA. It works. It is also a form the hospital would have handled for you somewhere between the footprints and the hearing test.

If the card still hasn't come by the filing deadline, IRS Publication 501 says you can file Form 4868 for an extension. File without the number and the credit is disallowed on that return.

How do I update my W-4 after having a baby?

With a new 2026 W-4 that puts $2,200 per child on line 3(a), carried to the Step 3 total, handed to payroll. Step 3 is the only line the baby changes.

The catch: a new W-4 replaces the old one, so anything already in Steps 2 and 4 has to be filled in again.

Payroll spreads the $2,200 across the year's paychecks and cuts each check's federal withholding by an equal slice (IRS Publication 15-T).

Paid weekly

$42.31

Paid every 2 weeks

$84.62

Paid monthly

$183.33

2 rules on the form itself:

  • 1 W-4 only. If both parents work, Step 3 goes on 1 W-4, most accurately the one for the highest-paying job, and stays blank on the other. Put it on both and the household under-withholds by $2,200.
  • Withholding stops at $0. Step 3 can't push a paycheck's federal withholding below zero. Our $40,000 couple only has $30 a paycheck withheld, so the W-4 returns $30, not $84.62. The other $1,420 arrives as the refundable credit in the spring.

Payroll divides by 26, not by the paychecks you have left.

So the change is $84.62 a check whether the W-4 reaches payroll in January or December. What moves is how much of the $2,200 lands in 2026, by paychecks left after the update.

W-4 Step 3 at $2,200, 26 biweekly paychecks, $84.62 each. Assumes each paycheck withholds at least $84.62, which takes about $54,200 of wages or more. Dadvesting calculation from IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Oct 16, 2026.
Paychecks left after the W-4 updateArrives in 2026 paychecksLeft for the 2026 refund
26 (updated in January)$2,200$0
20$1,692$508
13 (baby born around July 1)$1,100$1,100
6 (updated in early October)$508$1,692
0 (never updated)$0$2,200

Every row adds to $2,200. The W-4 only decides whether the money sits in your checking account in 2026 or with the IRS until 2027.

For a change in dependents partway through the year, the W-4 instructions point to the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator as the most accurate option. Step 3 by hand only knows how to divide by 26.

Does a baby born in 2026 get the $1,000 Trump Account deposit?

Yes, if someone files Form 4547 to elect it. Nothing arrives on its own, and it has nothing to do with the child tax credit.

A 2026 baby clears the birth window (after Dec 31, 2024 and before Jan 1, 2029) on day 1. The child also has to be a US citizen with an SSN issued before the election, expected to be your qualifying child, with no pilot election already processed.

Form 4547 can be filed at any time, including with your tax return. Since May 28, 2026 it can also go in through your IRS Individual Account, which the IRS says takes 5 to 10 minutes. No deposit could land before July 4, 2026, and that date has passed.

The wait has a price. We ran it in Trump Account vs 529: at 7% a year, each month the $1,000 sits unfunded costs about $20 by age 18.

What other tax credits do I get for having a baby?

Up to 2 more, depending on income and daycare. Below $58,863 of joint income, 1 qualifying child opens the earned income credit, worth up to $4,427 for 2026 (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

Our $40,000 couple gets about $3,014 of it with the baby. Without the baby, $0. Read that again.

If the baby is in paid care while both parents work, there is the Child and Dependent Care Credit, which the 2025 law raised to as much as 50% of qualifying expenses for 2026.

We ran that one against the $7,500 FSA in dependent care FSA limit 2026. For a 2-earner couple making $120,000 with 1 kid in daycare, a full $7,500 FSA cuts federal taxes by $1,474, versus $1,050 from the credit.

What the math says

A baby born in 2026 is worth $2,200 on the 2026 return for a married couple earning $37,200 to $400,000, and $84.62 a biweekly paycheck once Step 3 of the W-4 is updated. The variable that moves it is income: $50 of credit disappears for every $1,000, or any part of $1,000, over $400,000 joint, and at $443,001 with 1 child the baby is worth $0 on the return. Between $37,200 and $400,000 the credit never changes. The W-4 only decides when it arrives.

How we ran the numbers

1 Python script, run Oct 16, 2026. Every figure on this page is what it printed.

  • Tax year 2026, married filing jointly, 1 earner with all income as W-2 wages, 1 child born in 2026, no other dependents, no other credits in the tables. Modified adjusted gross income equals wages.
  • Standard deduction $32,200 and the 2026 joint rate table, both from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32. The "federal income tax before the baby" column is tax on wages minus the standard deduction, before any credit.
  • Child tax credit $2,200, reduced by $50 for each $1,000 or fraction of $1,000 of income over $400,000, never below $0 (26 U.S.C. 24(b) and 24(h)). The refundable part is the smaller of $1,700, the unused credit, or 15% of earned income over $2,500 (26 U.S.C. 24(d), 24(h) and 24(i), with the 2026 $1,700 from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32).
  • Withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Worksheet 1A, with the Standard annual table for married filing jointly, Step 2 box not checked, Steps 4(a), 4(b) and 4(c) blank, and the $12,900 adjustment on line 1g. Step 3 is $2,200 divided by 26 pay periods and subtracted from the tentative withholding, not below $0.
  • The earned income credit for the $40,000 couple uses the 2026 1-child figures in IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 ($4,427 maximum, phase-out from $31,160 joint, $0 at $58,863) and the 15.98% phase-out rate in 26 U.S.C. 32(b). Without a child, the joint phase-out ends at $26,820, so the same couple gets $0.
  • 26 biweekly paychecks. The timing table multiplies $84.62 by the paychecks remaining and treats the rest of the $2,200 as refund. The "early October" label counts back 6 biweekly pay periods (84 days) from Dec 31, 2026, to Oct 8. Pay dates vary.
  • Trump Account growth reference uses 7% a year compounded monthly, the same model as the rest of the site.
  • No state tax, no inflation adjustment, no fees. Dollar figures rounded to the nearest dollar, per-paycheck figures to the cent. $2,200 divided by 26 is $84.615, shown as $84.62.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim a baby born in December 2026 on my 2026 taxes?

Yes. IRS Publication 501 treats a child born during the year as having lived with you more than half of it, so a Dec 31 baby gets the full $2,200 for a married couple earning $37,200 to $400,000.

What is the maximum child tax credit per child in 2026?

$2,200 per qualifying child under 17 (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). It starts shrinking above $400,000 of modified adjusted gross income on a joint return, $200,000 for other filers.

Is the 2026 child tax credit refundable?

Partly. Up to $1,700 per child is refundable in 2026, limited to 15% of earned income over $2,500, and the other $500 only offsets tax owed. The IRS can't issue refunds that include it before mid-February.

How do I get a Social Security number for my newborn?

Through the Social Security question on the hospital's birth registration form, with Form SSA-2853 as the receipt. The fallback is Form SS-5 filed with the Social Security Administration.

What if my baby's Social Security card has not arrived by the tax deadline?

IRS Publication 501 says you can file Form 4868 for an automatic extension. The child's SSN only has to be issued by the return's due date including extensions, so an extension to October keeps the credit available.

Do both parents put the new baby on their W-4?

No. The 2026 Form W-4 puts Steps 3 to 4(b) on only 1 W-4 when a household has more than 1 job, most accurately the one for the highest-paying job. Claiming the $2,200 on both under-withholds by $2,200 for the year.

Does the $1,000 Trump Account deposit come automatically for a 2026 baby?

No. Someone has to file Form 4547 to elect it, with a tax return, on paper, or since May 28, 2026 in an IRS Individual Account. The child needs to be a US citizen with a Social Security number, born 2025 through 2028.

At what income do you lose the child tax credit in 2026?

It shrinks by $50 for every $1,000 or fraction of $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income over $400,000 on a joint return, $200,000 for other filers. With 1 child it reaches $0 at $443,001 joint. With 2 children, at $487,001.

Rules current as of Oct 2026: 2026 child tax credit $2,200 per child, refundable portion up to $1,700, phase-out from $400,000 joint and $200,000 other at $50 per $1,000, 2026 Form W-4 Step 3 at $2,200 per child, Trump Account pilot deposit $1,000 for US citizen children born 2025 through 2028. Rates and limits move, so check the date on this line before you lean on it.
